When it comes to training, South Dakota puts its money where its mouth is. Through our Workforce Development Program, companies have access to dollars to help train new AND existing employees. The Governor's Office of Economic Development will provide technical assistance to help develop the Workforce Development Program application. Technical assistance is provided to help identify approaches and ideas necessary to develop a successful project.

Companies must meet the following criteria in order to participate in the program:
All training must be technical in nature
New employee training must be the result of growth in the company, not attrition.
The wage of the employees before the training begins must be at least $11.00 per hour.
Current employee trainees must receive an increase in their wages that is directly attributed to the training.
Companies must offer the employees health insurance that is at least partially paid by the employer.
How it Works
The Workforce Development Program can fund up to 50 percent of the eligible training expenses. A typical award is $500 per trainee. If an applicant is approved for funding, the award is made on a reimbursement basis upon completion of the training. Awards are paid on a per person basis with 85% of the grant paid upon receipt of the initial report and 15% paid upon receipt of the follow-up report.
The application must be completed and submitted at least three weeks before training is scheduled to begin. The application must contain the following:
