International Company Blasts Past Job Projections at South Dakota Facility
Three-Year Goal Met in One Year
When Buhler Industries began doing business in South Dakota back in February 2010, the Salem area was abuzz with the prospect of the company bringing nearly 50 new jobs to the community in a matter of three years. After all, 47 new jobs in a community that is just under 1,500 is a big deal!
But the company exceeded even its own expectations. Buhler Industries created its 47 new jobs in less than one year, and the company currently employees 57 at its Salem, S.D. facility.
“There are a lot of qualified people in Salem and the surrounding area that are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed,” said Director of Human Resources Todd Trueman.
And that is part of the community spirit found in Salem and in South Dakota. But, it was a much different picture for the community back in 2009, when Feterl, one of the community’s major employers, filed for bankruptcy.
Ultimately, Buhler Industries purchased Feterl’s land, buildings, equipment, tooling, inventory, patents and trademarks. The acquisition enabled Buhler to expand its line of Farm King grain-handling equipment and increase its auger manufacturing capacity.
The purchase was financed with the help of a loan from South Dakota’s REDI (Revolving Economic Development & Initiative) Fund.
“The loan was relatively easy to obtain, and the experience with the GOED was excellent. The REDI Fund loan was a definite consideration in our relocation and allowed us to start manufacturing quickly and enabled us to hire qualified employees,” Trueman said.
Although there are no immediate plans for more employees, the company hasn’t ruled that out.
“Since we achieved our three-year target in the first year, we'll review the staff levels on an ongoing basis,” Trueman concluded.
