South Dakota Announces Creation of State's First Megasite

Foundation Park in Northwest Sioux Falls to Contain 800+ Acres

The question: Where can you find a megasite with more than 800 acres, access to two major Interstate highways, and class one rail service that is located minutes away from a major airport?

The answer: South Dakota.

The state of South Dakota and Sioux Falls city and economic development officials recently announced the development of the state’s first megasite, Foundation Park. Foundation Park is going to be located in northwest Sioux Falls, and in addition to its size, intersecting cross-country Interstate access, airport proximity, and rail service, the site will also enjoy access to city water, sewer, redundant electrical service, and a regional trade center with a diversified economy and skilled workforce.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to make this announcement,” said GOED Commissioner Pat Costello. “Foundation Park is truly going to be a fabulous site for manufacturers looking to expand in South Dakota.  And, now is a great time to take on such expansions.”

Costello noted that the state has seen record capital investment by South Dakota manufacturers. In 2014, the state saw the third-largest capital investment by manufacturers since 1955, when the state started conducting its manufacturing survey.

“If it is the right time for your company to expand, South Dakota has the right place,” Costello said. “We have historically had a very strong manufacturing base, but having a site of this magnitude will appeal to larger companies that may have never considered South Dakota before.”

The announcement comes on the heels of the launch of the Build Dakota Scholarship Program, for which the state, in partnership with philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, has set aside $50 million in full-ride scholarship funding for a host of technical degrees in manufacturing fields.

Foundation Park is one of South Dakota's many industrial parks. In recent years, the South Dakota Governor's Office of Economic Development began certifying sites under it's Certified Ready Sites Program, and now has numerous certifed sites at various locations across the state.
