Trade Shows Put South Dakota on National and International Scenes

BIO International Convention, Select USA Held in June

The Governor and other representatives are showcasing the State of South Dakota at two trade shows this month.

BIO International Convention, held June 6-9 in San Francisco, Calif., is the world’s largest event for biotechnology attracting more than 15,000 industry leaders from around the globe. Attendees have the opportunity to network, discover new breakthroughs in science, and meet and collaborate with new partners.

For Gov. Daugaard in his team, that meant the opportunity to meet with some of the biggest names in the bioscience and pharma industries and highlight why South Dakota is a great location for their businesses.

“We had a great show at BIO this year. This was the first of several years that we didn’t have a booth, but instead concentrated our energy on securing and attending high-quality meetings,” said Pat Costello, GOED Commissioner. “When we are able to have several meetings of this caliber in the span of a few days, it makes for a productive and successful trip.”

A delegation from South Dakota has been attending or exhibiting at the show for a number of years, and 2016 marked Governor Daugaard’s sixth consecutive visit to the show, making him the show’s best-attended governor.

While out west, the South Dakota delegation met with some IT companies in the Silicon Valley region as well.

"There is incredible talent and opportunity in the Silicon Valley region. It was meaningful to visit with some emerging leaders and share the advantages and opportunities of doing business in South Dakota," Costello said.

The SelectUSA Investment Summit will be held in Washington, D.C., June 19-21. There, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development representatives will join other state, local and regional economic development organizations across the country in cultivating direct foreign investment from companies abroad.

Hosted by the President, the SelectUSA Investment Summit is the highest-profile event promoting investment in the United States, bringing together global companies and EDOs to share investment opportunities. In 2015, more than 2,000 individuals attended the show.

South Dakota economic developers that are not attending the shows but would like to promote the industry in their regions are encouraged to use the GOED’s industry materials in their own recruitment efforts.

Farewell, Commissioner Costello

Pat Costello, who has served as the GOED's Commissioner since 2011, will be leaving the office at the end of June to pursue an opportunity in the private sector. Gov. Dennis Daugaard said, “Pat has been an outstanding representative for South Dakota, and under his leadership, our state has added thousands of jobs and continued to be one of the best places in America for business."  Aaron Scheibe, GOED’s deputy commissioner, will serve as interim commissioner from July 1 until a new commissioner is named.
