Authorities

Partners in Progress

The South Dakota Science & Technology Authority, Housing Development Authority and Ellsworth Development authority are crucial to supporting economic development in our communities. These authorities support South Dakota through innovation, housing and advocacy, and are essential to the success of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

Science & Technology Authority

A laboratory 4,850 feet underground in the Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota helped start a revolution in physics. The Sanford Underground Research Facility at Homestake is advancing our understanding of the universe and plays an essential role in its economic contributions to our state.

Housing Development Authority

Since 1973, the South Dakota Housing Development Authority has been dedicated to developing affordable housing for all South Dakotans. Working through local partnerships, SDHDA helps to provide decent, healthy and safe housing opportunities to those in need, including low-income and moderate-income families, as well as the elderly and disabled. Visit the SDHDA website to find information about housing programs and affordable housing developments in South Dakota, including the Governor’s House Program and the First-Time Homebuyer Program.

Ellsworth Development Authority

The South Dakota Ellsworth Development Authority was created by the South Dakota Legislature in March of 2009 with the following mission:

  • To make sure that the great state of South Dakota is always a great place for the U.S. Department of Defense to conduct its essential national defense mission at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
  • To work hand in hand with local governments, the private sector and property owners to promote the health and safety of those living or working near the base.
  • To protect and promote the economic impact of Ellsworth Air Force Base and associated industry.
  • To work with the Base and local communities to prepare for additional growth in missions at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
